Dearest Subaru,

We got into an accident on Wednesday, a pretty scary one. I didn’t see it coming, but I suppose that’s why they call it getting blindsided. Because that’s what happened – an SUV hit us on the driver’s side, spinning us almost 3/4 of the way around. Your entire driver’s side is crushed, the windows shattered, the roof buckled.. but I walked away with only an unimpressive bruise on my elbow. I’ve never been in an accident worse than a fender bender before, and I’ve never been happier that I chose you when I was looking for a new car two years ago.

I didn’t know you had side curtain airbags or a reinforced body, just that Subaru Legacys get five star government crash test ratings year after year. Those things are the reason I’m not a bloody mess right now.

I visited you at the autobody shop yesterday, and it was a shock to see you all broken. I was so glad my dad was with me, because seeing how damaged you are hammered it into my head yet again that I am really fucking lucky. I don’t know what’s going to happen to you now. I don’t know if you’ll be in the shop for a few weeks, or if they will even be able to fix you at all. I will be so sad if I have to get a new car, but I’ll tell you this much: I’m getting another Subaru, without any hesitation.

I’m still a bit shaken up over the whole ordeal, and now I’ve got to think about things like renting a car, finding money for my insurance deductible or even a new car… but the only thing that matters is that I’m okay. I’m totally fine, and that’s because of you. Thank you for saving my life.

Love,
Elizabeth

Three Hundred and Sixty Five

October 19, 2007

Today I took my last picture for Project365, meaning that I have successfully taken a photo a day for a year. Holy crap.

This project has been quite a trip. It wasn’t always easy, that’s for sure. However, the experience overall was SUCH a positive one. I think my photography has come a long way since last October, and I’m looking at the world in an entirely new way.

It’s staggering to look back at all 365 photos and see the past year documented. A lot has happened through this year of pictures… A year ago, I was still in graduate school, living with my parents, working as an administrative assistant, nearing the end of a long relationship, and just beginning to realize how much I loved to take pictures. Today, I have a masters, I’m working as a librarian, living on my own for the first time, dating someone else, and feeling a little less strange saying that photography is one of the things that makes me really happy.

I don’t know what’s next for me, but I only hope my next endeavor helps me grow as much as this one has. I also have to say thank you to everyone… for helping me along the way, for inspiring me, for listening to me worry about my photo for the day, for being IN the photos themselves, for always encouraging me, and most of all, just for following along.

And finally, just for kicks… here’s Project365 by the numbers…

26 photos of me
13 photos of shoes
40 photos of food and/or drinks
8 photos of rain
10 photos of snow/ice
7 photos of animals
15 cell phone camera shots
18 photos while driving
2 photos in the car wash
8 photos of books
10 photos of crafty things
5 photos of tea

So that’s the list. At the beginning of the year I made some pretty lofty Book Resolutions instead of New Year’s Resolutions. I didn’t read any classics, and I didn’t make it to my goal of 25 books. The only small victory was that I read exactly one more book in 2006 than I did in 2005. Which is good, I suppose. In any case, for 2007, I am going to keep my Book Resolutions simple:

  • Read more than 24 books.

Wish me luck.

Can we go back today? How about tomorrow?

Just before first pitch

I’m surprised I slept at all on Friday night. I was that excited. Like a little kid, really. We took the 9:15 train, and then the subway. We got to the stadium about two hours before game time, and when we got there, they weren’t even letting anyone in yet. Luckily, we didn’t have to stand in the sun for all that long before we got to go inside. The 7 train is an elevated train, so we could see the stadium as we got closer and closer. It’s really strange to see something in person after seeing it on TV for years, that’s for sure.

Our seats were great – just past the foul pole in right field, in the first level above field level. They were also in the shade, and we got this breeze that was perfect. Once I got past the fact that some of the people who were at the game were just weird, plain and simple, it was amazing to be in among throngs of people who were just as excited to be there as I was (well, for the most part). We walked around the stadium a bit, and got some ridiculously awesome hot dogs and a beer that came in an aluminum bottle plastered with Mets logos. In retrospect, we totally should have gone to the Clubhouse Store before the game started (we certainly had more than enough time), because we didn’t get a chance to at all. We didn’t want to miss any of the game to go (hell, we missed the entire fifth inning waiting in line for beers), and by the time the game was over, they had the doors locked and closed, and they would only let people into the store when someone else came out. (Which, actually, is probably a really efficient system, but we didn’t want to wait in the line.)

The game itself was a good one to see in person. They were behind for a lot of the game, and then came back in really exciting fashion in the sixth inning. There’s something to be said for being there, living it, jumping out of your seat to yell and cheer along with thirty thousand other people who are also jumping around and screaming their heads off. I can’t even IMAGINE what a playoff game would be like. Wow. When they scored their runs to retake the lead, we got so excited that we were jumping up and down, and while I was sort of nervous that I was going to spill my beer, I found that I really didn’t care very much about that after all. THAT is why it’s so much fun to be there. Because you just don’t care if your beer gets spilled, for one day in your life.

After the game, we walked down to field level and got to look out on the field from the home plate area, which was just as cool. While the logistics of season tickets sort of baffle me (don’t people have jobs that they have to go to? It takes a lot of time to get there and back), I can completely understand why people do it.

Plus, we had dinner at Chipotle, which would be worth paying for a train ticket all by itself.

It was a great day.

Here is a slideshow of all the pictures.
